Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer

At The Dermatology and Hair Institute our dermatologists have vast experience in the detection and diagnosis of skin cancer in both its early and advanced stages. It is also very important to keep in mind that preventative assessment and care may significantly lower the risks of skin cancer.

There is little doubt that South Africans enjoy the sun. Unfortunately, with improper sun protection techniques, skin cancer may arise. Melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) are the two most prevalent types of cancer in the world. Our aim is to provide appropriate treatment for all skin cancers. Due to South Africa’s geographic location, the amount of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), as well as the increased sun exposure from jobs and leisure activities, the people of South Africa are at a disproportionately high risk of developing skin cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancer and melanoma incidence have been rising rapidly all over the world.

We advocate strongly for skin cancer prevention, not only via sunscreen, but also by treating skin cancers at their earliest stages. We use special techniques and equipment to identify and diagnose skin cancer while they are only a few cells thick.

SKIN CANCER

Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the two most prevalent subtypes of non-melanoma skin cancer. Due to their slow growth, the majority of non-melanoma skin cancers are effectively treatable. Some non-melanoma skin cancers however can grow or spread internally and potentially become lethal if they are not treated.

Melanoma

Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer which can occur anywhere on the skin, including the back and other difficult-to-see places. Additionally, it can affect the skin that lines the lips, nose, and genitalia. Melanoma can spread to internal organs if it is not treated. Oftentimes, melanoma resembles a brown or black mole or birthmark.
